Mac computers are expensive because they feature many useful functions, and they are fast compared to many Windows devices. Of course, when you buy a new Mac, you always expect it to be very fast, but over time, you may feel disappointed because it’s just getting slower and slower. Fortunately, there are various ways to speed the computer up and recover its performance. Do not worry, it doesn’t require any special knowledge or computer skills. Probably, you remember how you turned on the Mac for the first time, and we believe it was a special moment for you. But if now you spend too much time waiting till your computer starts, it’s time to do something and recover its speed. Here are simple but quite effective things you can do:

  1. Restart the computer. It seems too easy maybe, but sometimes it helps significantly. When your device restarts, memory is getting cleaned and all the stuck or reload processes are getting closed. If the startup process of your Mac takes a lot of time, it means something is wrong. In many cases, it may be connected with external drives that slow down the computer.
  2. Delete cache files. Over time, your computer may store too many temporary cache files that take up space and decrease its speed. Removing these files regularly is the best solution to keep your device in good shape! Of course, Mac’s speed depends on many factors, but maybe after deleting cache files it will work much better.
  3. Create data backups. If you experience any problem with a slow Mac, it’s understandable that you will not want to lose any important information. If there are some hardware issues with your device, it’s very important to save your files. Use Time Machine to create data backups and save all the data successfully.
  4. Remove unused applications. We are sure you have a pile of installed apps on your device. But do you use all these programs? Check out which of them are not used for more than 6 months and delete them properly. Sometimes, unused applications can slow down the computer because they take up space or have some background processes, eating up the memory.
  5. Delete duplicates. Maybe you do not suspect how many duplicate files you have on the computer? Everyone stores on their device photos, videos, and various documents, and there is a pile of duplicates that take up space on the Mac and decrease its speed. You can search for duplicates manually (be prepared, it’s a long process!), or download special software to find them manually.
  6. Check your Mac for computer viruses. Some users think their devices are reliable and cannot be attacked by viruses. Unfortunately, this is not true, and it’s better to install a reliable antivirus to scan your device regularly. Some viruses can slow down the computer and cause problems with its speed.
  7. Remove old backups. If you always create your system backups, it’s a good way to keep your computer and its files in a proper condition, but over time, do not forget to delete old files with backups. They take too much space and may cause problems with your Mac’s performance.
  8. Check out the storage space. Sometimes, when you have saved too many documents, files, photos, and videos on the Mac, it can work slower because its storage is clogged with files. Check it out and remove unused and unnecessary files from the device. Always try to keep about 15% of its space free, and it will help the computer to work faster. If you have too many large files saved on the Mac, we recommend getting an external drive to save these files there.

It’s easy to keep your favorite device in a good condition if you follow our tips. If you are interested, please feel free to continue reading about other ways on how to recover your Mac’s speed.
