Qualcomm announced today three new platforms, destined to be used in medium and high-end smartphones, considering that the solution is already present for the premium segment Snapdragon 855. Some features so far exclusive of the 8 series are now also present in the Snapdragon 730 model, which is available in a variant optimized for gaming.
In addition to improving the 7 series, the Snapdragon 665 also arrives, which improves the mid-range with technologically advanced solutions, aimed at improving the performance and autonomy of modern smartphones. Let’s discover the details of the innovations presented today.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 665
There are not many news presented by Snapdragon 665, whose purpose seems only to ideally give the change to Snapdragon 660, a by now dated chipset, but still very popular among smartphone manufacturers. It starts with an 11-nanometer production process instead of 14 nanometers, which should improve autonomy, while the graphics sector is renewed with an Adreno 610 GPU, which guarantees support for the Vulkan 1.1 API.
The octa core CPU remains, which once again uses the cores Kryo 260, with optimizations that reduce energy consumption by 20% in gaming. As far as the screen is concerned, the limit of FullHD + panel support remains, up to 1080 × 2520 pixels
There is no news regarding the support for the photographic sector and for the modem, a Snapdragon X12 Cat.13 model. As for the cameras, support for a triple rear camera is guaranteed, with a maximum 48-megapixel sensor, optical zoom support, wide-angle and super-wide-angle lenses.
The most important improvements of the Mobile Platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 should be noticeable in the artificial intelligence sector, thanks to a renewed ISP able to improve the recognition of objects and scenes, to the new GPU and to two Hexagon Vector eXtensions.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 / 730G
Definitely more interesting are the innovations proposed by Mobile Platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 730, made with an 8 nanometer manufacturing process, more advanced than the one used for Snapdragon 710 and Snapdragon 845, which are based on a 10 nanometer design.
Also in this case the performances in the field of artificial intelligence significantly improve, with the new Adreno 618 GPU, the Kryo 470 cores and a TensorFlow accelerator taken from that of Snapdragon 855. The ISP Spectra 350 also incorporates artificial intelligence functions similar to those found in the ISP Spectra 380 of Snapdragon 855, with functions of depth sensing at 60 frames per second and 4K video recording with real-time bokeh effect.
The new ISO integrates the control for a 36 megapixel camera with ZSL (zero shutter lag), a function not available on 48-megapixel sensors. The Kryo 470 cores promise a 35% performance improvement over those used on Snapdragon 710, with a 20% lower consumption for games, especially those based on OpenGL ES.
There Mobile Platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, as the abbreviation suggests, is dedicated to gaming and offers some advanced solutions. It starts with a 15% increase in rendering speed to switch to support for QHD + screens (absent on Snapdragon 710 and Snapdragon 730).
WiFi settings have been optimized to reduce latency, with a 90% reduction in gaming jams at 30 frames per second. The Snapdragon 730G improvements also go towards the photographic sector, with video support slow motion at 960 frames per second at 720p resolution, although interpolation from 240 fps video is required to get the final result.
The three platforms of Qualcomm they will be available starting from the middle of 2019, so already in the next few months we will be able to see the first solutions based on them.
